Marvel is rebounding.
After posting its worst-ever box office performance last November, the studio returned to the top spot with “Deadpool and Wolverine.” As the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, its domestic debut grossed $211 million, setting a record for the highest-grossing debut for an R-rated movie in 2024.
It is also the highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movie since 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
This is a promising development for the company disneyMarvel Studios, owned by Marvel Studios, has struggled to maintain box office momentum following the release of 2019’s historic “Avengers: Endgame.” The pursuit of quantity in theatrical productions and streaming episodes has led to a decline in quality and has kept audiences away.
“Welcome to the Marvel Universe,” Reno’s Deadpool says to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the film, which opened over the weekend. “You were at a bit of a low point when you joined.”
That low point was 2023’s Marvel, which had the MCU’s lowest ever domestic debut ($46.1 million) and lowest global box office gross (under $200 million).
Marvel Studios, meanwhile, remains reeling from pandemic-related production shutdowns and twin strikes in Hollywood. His heir apparent, Jonathan Majors, was subsequently convicted of misdemeanor assault and harassment, leading to his firing and casting doubt on Evil Kang’s future.
However, with the recent success of Deadpool and Wolverine and the addition of several strategic hires, Marvel seems to be turning things around. That’s good news for the studio, which has grossed more than $30 billion at the box office since 2008.
