Shapiro was supposed to attend at least two events in the Hamptons, including a meet-and-greet with wealthy donors at the home of public relations director Mike Kempner.

“The governor’s trip was planned weeks ago and will include several fundraisers for his own campaign committee,” Shapiro spokesman Manuel Bonder confirmed to NBC News. ” His schedule has changed and he is no longer traveling to Hampton this weekend.”

More than 100 people are expected to attend Sunday’s meeting at Kempner’s home in Water Mill, New York, including people from the legal, sports and financial industries, the person explained. The person spoke on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely about private matters.

According to the invitation, Shapiro was supposed to attend a fundraiser for an organization called “The Next 50” in East Hampton on Saturday.

Shapiro became a favorite of some of Harris’ advisers, in part because of his popularity in the must-win swing state. Shapiro’s approval rating is the highest among governors in the United States.

He is also widely seen as a moderate Democrat with a pro-business agenda and a willingness to seek common ground with Republicans.

Harris’ campaign has announced that she and her running mate will launch a weeklong campaign tour in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

The location only fueled speculation that Shapiro could be a running mate.
