Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Thursday he has agreed to hold three debates with Democratic rival Kamala Harris on three different news networks in September.
“I think it’s very important to have a debate,” Trump said at the start of a personal news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
The former president said he agreed to a September 4 debate on Fox News. He also said his campaign had a “pretty complete deal” with NBC News and an agreement with ABC News for two more debates in September.
ABC has previously agreed to host the presidential debate between Trump and Harris on September 10. Fox also previously agreed to host the debate between Trump and Harris.
Trump made the announcement at the start of his personal press conference as he attempts to slow the momentum of his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Trump campaign is pressuring Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, to take questions from the media.
Vice President Harris has largely avoided the media since President Joe Biden withdrew his re-election bid last month and endorsed her to succeed him.
As she and Walz began campaigning in key battleground states, Trump’s campaign and his allies tried to intimidate them into speaking off the cuff.
But it’s unclear whether the pressure campaign will have an impact on Democratic votes, which are still being driven by a sudden surge in voter enthusiasm and polling.
Harris campaign spokesman Amal Moussa told Trump’s press conference that the former president was “throwing a tantrum” because he wasn’t getting the attention he “craved.”
“Trump has no vision, no solutions, and he is on a revenge campaign to implement his Plan 2025 agenda and make people’s lives worse,” Moussa said.
