Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Wednesday that he will not run in next month’s Liberal Democratic Party presidential election.
Local news outlet Kyodo News Broadcaster NHK reported the news earlier.
NHK broadcaster reports Kishida Inform senior administrative officials of the decisionwhich would see him effectively resign as prime minister while a new leader is appointed.
The government has been mired in political financing scandals over misallocations between party factions and the underreporting of party funds raised.
In early January, Kishida Ruling party’s largest faction disbanded after scandal.
