Republican presidential running mate J.D. Vance said Thursday that he will debate Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz on October 1, while also asking his opponent to accept another debate on September 18.

“The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three debates,” Vance, the U.S. senator from Ohio, said in a statement. Publish on social media platform.

“I’m accepting not only the October 1st debate on CBS, but also the September 18th debate on CNN,” said former President Donald Trump’s running mate. “I’m looking forward to the debate on See you in two places!”

Walz, the governor of Minnesota and Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, agreed on Wednesday to face Vance in a debate hosted by CBS News on October 1.

It’s unclear whether Walz has agreed to participate in the Sept. 18 debate. A spokesperson for the Harris campaign did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on Vance’s X post.

“CNN has invited Senator Vance and Governor Walz to participate in this fall’s vice presidential debate, and Senator Vance has accepted,” a CNN spokesperson told CNBC in a statement.

“We remain in communication with the campaigns to provide the American public with the opportunity to hear from the leading candidates for President and Vice President of the United States, and we look forward to programming in the fall,” the spokesperson said.

If Walz accepts a Sept. 18 debate with Vance, the event could divert attention from Trump, who is scheduled to be sentenced that day in New York in a criminal hush-money case.

Trump was convicted in late May of 34 counts of falsifying business records as part of an effort to cover up hush-money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election.

Daniels said she had sex with Trump while they were married in 2006 and that she was paid by Trump’s then-personal attorney Michael Cohen. Trump reimbursed Cohen after becoming president.

Trump and Harris agreed last week to participate in the September 10 presidential debate hosted by ABC News. Trump urged Harris to accept a Fox News debate on September 4 and a debate hosted by NBC News on September 25.
