Former President Donald Trump is countering the start of the Democratic National Convention and Vice President Kamala Harris’ recently unveiled economic agenda by crafting his own plan to boost the U.S. economy, the Republican campaign said on Monday.
The announcement is just the latest sign of the Trump campaign’s efforts to refocus its message on policy now that Harris is the Democratic nominee, countering many of Trump’s lines of attack against his former rival, President Joe Biden.
The Trump campaign said in a press release on Monday morning that Trump would share a plan to “free up America’s energy and lower costs for American families.”
The agenda includes preserving the tax cuts he signed into law in 2017, the news release said. These reforms are due to expire after 2025.
Trump has recently advocated for a series of tax cuts, including eliminating the service worker tip tax and ending the Social Security tax for seniors.
He has also pledged to cut U.S. energy prices in half, and he recently proposed implementing comprehensive tariff Imported goods are subject to tariffs of up to 20%.
He did not elaborate on how those policy goals would be implemented or how they would be paid for. The Constitution gives Congress the power to impose taxes, which means any plan to reform the tax code must pass the legislative branch.
Trump is scheduled to hold an economic and energy-focused campaign event at an equipment manufacturer in York, Pennsylvania, on Monday at 3 p.m. ET.
Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. Vance, will also deliver a speech on energy and the economy in Philadelphia early Monday afternoon, the Trump campaign said.
Much of Monday’s press release focused on attacking Harris rather than outlining Trump’s economic agenda.
The campaign accused Harris of wanting to invalidate Trump-era tax cuts and trying to ban gasoline-powered cars, among other accusations.
Both charges contained links to articles written in 2019 when Harris was the Democratic presidential candidate. The Biden administration is not seeking to ban the sale or ownership of cars that: traditional gas engine.
Both the Trump and Harris campaigns claim the other’s plan will increase average costs for Americans.
“Donald Trump may hope no one notices his plans to increase costs for middle- and working-class Americans when he lies about Vice President Harris’ agenda, but he needs to do that,” said Brian Nelson, a senior policy official with the Harris campaign. Take responsibility.
Nelson’s statement cited a recent study by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a progressive advocacy group, that Trump’s tariff plan This equates to a tax increase of $3,900 for a middle-income household.
Trump gave a speech in North Carolina last week to declare how he would handle the economy after being re-elected in the White House. But his attention was often distracted, talking at length about immigration and other issues while hurling personal insults at Harris.
Days later, at a news conference at a New Jersey golf club, Trump spoke in front of a table laden with groceries that were displayed to show how prices have risen under Biden. But he turned again Far from the topic.
