The Democratic National Convention changed its tone this election year, with delegates singing and dancing with joy as they nominated Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the presidential race.

As state delegations stood to vote for the nomination on Tuesday night, Democratic National Committee disc jockey DJ Cassidy played a different song at Chicago’s United Center, adding to an already celebratory atmosphere in the hall.

Some of the songs’ titles include the state’s name, including Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” Beyoncé’s “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” and The B-52s’ “Private Idaho.”

Other song choices depended on the artist’s hometown: Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” represented New Jersey, Prince’s “1999” represented Minnesota; Jackson sang “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough” for Indiana; and chapel roanMissouri’s “Good Luck, Baby.”

The Rhode Island delegation voted to the tune of “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift, who owns a home in the state.

When Democratic National Committee Secretary Jason Ray asked Georgia delegates how to vote, Lil Jon — an Atlanta native — emerged from the stands to cheers from the crowd.

The rapper performed his hit song “Turn Down for What,” changing the lyrics to “Turn out for what,” and led the crowd in chants of Harris’ chant: “We’re not going back.”

The roughly hour-long roll call, usually one of the most boring parts of party congresses, took social media by storm.

Many people associate it with republican national conventionThe roll call in July was noticeably quieter.

“It looked like a big party and celebration and everyone in the room looked like they were having a great time,” wrote McCain, whose father, the late Republican Sen. John McCain Was the party’s 2008 presidential candidate.

“Tired: RNC roll call,” the Lincoln Project tweeted.

“Wired: Democratic National Committee roll call,” the tweet read.

Unlike previous conventions, Tuesday’s roll call of delegates was ceremonial. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison announced earlier this month that Harris had won the party’s nomination following an online vote.
