Microsoft On Wednesday it said it would release its controversial Recall artificial intelligence search feature to Windows users and begin testing it in October.
Recall takes screenshots of on-screen activity so people can search for information they’ve seen before. Security researchers were quick to express concern about the risk of Windows automatically capturing images without user choice. Microsoft responded in June that Recall would be turned off by default. It is also working on enhancing the security of the feature.
Microsoft did not specify when a wider release of Windows PCs, which the company calls Copilot+ PCs, will meet the system requirements for the Recall feature. Microsoft unveiled new Windows PCs from multiple device makers that can run artificial intelligence workloads and demonstrated Recall running on those PCs at an event in May.

Device makers are keen to show that people can run artificial intelligence models on their local PCs, rather than relying on OpenAI or other companies’ cloud-based servers to fulfill their requests. apple A MacBook has been released that can run AI models, and Microsoft’s latest Surface Pro is a Copilot+ PC that can also run local AI.
The timing of Recall’s wide release could be crucial. If Microsoft brings Recall to all devices that support the feature by then, consumers may be more interested in buying new computers during the holidays.
“As part of our commitment to providing customers with a trustworthy and secure Recall (Preview) experience on Copilot+ PCs, we are sharing an update that will make Recall available to Windows Insiders starting in October. June Blog Post. “As previously shared on June 13, we have adjusted our release approach to leverage the valuable expertise of the Windows Insider community before making Recall available for all Copilot+ PCs.”
Security has become a top priority for the average engineer at Microsoft. During the current fiscal year, which begins July 1, the company will assess cybersecurity contributions during employee reviews and include them in salaries. A report released by the Department of Homeland Security in April that China compromised the Microsoft-based email accounts of U.S. government officials raised some concerns, and the company pledged to improve its security processes.
“We continue to put security first,” Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella told analysts on a July conference call.
