Canadian government imposes 100% tariff on imported goods Electric cars made in China Compliant with US tariffs.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced on Monday that he would impose a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum.
“Actors like China choose to give themselves an unfair advantage in global markets,” Trudeau told a cabinet retreat in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

A few weeks ago, the U.S. and European Commission announced plans to impose higher import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan encouraged Canada to do the same when he met with Trudeau and cabinet ministers at a cabinet retreat in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Sunday.
Currently, the only Chinese-made electric vehicles imported into Canada come from Tesla, produced at the company’s Shanghai factory. There are currently no Chinese brand electric vehicles sold or imported.
Freeland said that because North America has an integrated automotive industry, Canada will act in concert with its allies in the United States and the European Union. Freeland said her government will ensure Canada does not become a dumping ground for excess Chinese supplies.
U.S. President Joe Biden said Chinese government subsidies for electric vehicles and other consumer goods ensured Chinese companies did not have to profit, giving them an unfair advantage in global trade.
Chinese companies can Electric cars sell for as low as $12,000. China’s solar cell plants and steel and aluminum plants have enough capacity to meet much of the world’s demand, and Chinese officials believe their production can keep prices low and help transition to a green economy.
