In her first sit-down interview since succeeding President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee more than a month ago, Harris also defended the distinctly centrist policy shifts she has made since running for president in 2019.
“I think the most important and important aspect of my policy views and decisions is that my values have not changed,” Harris told Bash, specifically citing her values on border security and climate change.
The remarks came in the first segment of a joint interview between Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

The vice president picked two hot-button issues to make her case.
“You mentioned the Green New Deal,” Harris said. “I’ve always believed, and I’ve been working hard, that the climate crisis is real, it’s an urgent issue, and we should apply some metrics, including meeting deadlines.”
“We did that with the Inflation Reduction Act. We set goals for the United States and globally for when we should meet certain standards for reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” she said.
“For example, the value has not changed.”
Harris continued, “My values revolve around what we need to do to secure our border — and that hasn’t changed.”
“I served two terms as California’s attorney general, prosecuting transnational criminal organizations, violations of U.S. law, and the passage of — illegal passage — “We have guns, drugs and people on our border,” she said. “My values haven’t changed.”
