Walt Ehmer, Waffle House president and CEO and Atlanta Police Foundation board member, dies at 58 foundation announced Sunday.

Emmer joined Waffle House in 1992 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming company president in 2002 and later adding the titles of CEO and chairman, according to his alma mater, Georgia Tech.

“His leadership, dedication and passion touched the lives of many inside and outside the Waffle House family. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy,” Mayor Andre Dickens said in a press release.

The Waffle House board of directors released a statement Sunday afternoon saying Emmer died after a long illness. “He will be greatly missed by the entire Waffle House family,” the statement read.

Ehmer served as president of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2012 to 2013 and has served on numerous organizations, including the Georgia Tech Foundation Board and the Georgia Tech Advisory Council.

The Waffle House all-day restaurant chain opened in 1955 and currently has more than 1,900 locations in 25 states.

Emer is reportedly survived by three children atlanta constitution.
