If you are traveling to the UK as early as this week, you may need to apply for a travel authorization online before departure.

Starting Wednesday, Britain will require U.S. citizens, Canadian citizens and nationals from more than three dozen other countries to obtain a so-called electronic travel authorization (ETA).

Here’s what travelers need to know:

What is an electronic travel authorization?

An ETA is a pre-authorization for travelers arriving from countries that do not require a visa in the UK.

The UK launched the scheme in 2024 for citizens from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. On Wednesday, the policy will take effect in many other countries.

Passengers still need to go through immigration formalities upon arrival. The United States requires nationals from EU countries, the United Kingdom, and other countries that do not require a visa to enter to obtain an estimated time of arrival. Later in 2025, EU countries will require it for U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries with similar standards.

If you have a visa and are authorized to live, work or study in the UK, you do not need an ETA

How long does it take?

What about the children?

Everyone who is eligible for an ETA needs one, including infants and children.

What if I have a connecting flight in the UK?

Even if you are traveling to a UK airport to connect to another country, you will need an estimated time of arrival.
