France’s unified inflation rate drops sharply in September data The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Research (Insee) showed this on Friday.

Harmonized consumer prices in the euro zone’s second-largest economy were 1.5% in September, down from 2.2% in August. The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) is adjusted for comparison with other euro area countries.

The HICP data came in below the 2.0% forecast of economists polled by Reuters, which could increase pressure on European Central Bank policymakers to take steps to stimulate the overall economy.

Meanwhile, France’s consumer price index (CPI) in September is tentatively estimated at 1.2%, down from 1.8% in August.

Insee said the sharp fall in inflation reflected a marked decline in energy prices, particularly petroleum products, as well as the seasonal impact of lower transport costs and the return to normalization of certain tariffs following the Olympics and Paralympics.
