A pro-Palestinian protest broke out outside the New York Stock Exchange on Monday. Trading was undisturbed and no protesters appeared to have arrived on the historic trading floor.
The New York Stock Exchange security fence separates the exterior perimeter of the building on Broad Street in Lower Manhattan. The group, Jewish Voice for Peace, broke into the area and protesters chained themselves to security fences and some exterior doors, according to videos shared on social media. Video shows some protesters being arrested and led away in ties.
The exchange restricted access to the building due to the protests. It was unclear if any protesters entered anywhere inside the building.
Slogans such as “We want housing, not genocide” and “Let Gaza survive” could be heard in a live broadcast on social media platform X.
The New York Stock Exchange has not responded to a request for comment.
The protests followed continued bloodshed in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict triggered by Hamas attacks in southern Israel more than a year ago. Since then, Israel has launched military attacks on the Gaza Strip. The exchange has had strict security measures in place since the 9/11 attacks on the nearby World Trade Center towers.
