Israel launched airstrikes against military targets in Iran early Saturday in retaliation for an Oct. 1 ballistic missile attack, officials said. There is no immediate information on the damage suffered by the Islamic Republic.

The Israeli military described the attack as a “precision strike against Iranian military targets” but did not immediately elaborate.

“Since October 7, the Iranian regime and its proxies in the region have been relentlessly attacking Israel on seven fronts, including direct attacks from Iranian soil,” an Israeli military statement said. “Like all others in the world, Like a sovereign state, the State of Israel has the right and obligation to respond.”

Explosions could be heard in the Iranian capital, Tehran, with local state media initially acknowledging an explosion and saying some of the sounds came from air defense systems surrounding the city.

The war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has continued in recent months, with Iran launching two ballistic missile attacks on Israel. The war began with an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023. A ground invasion of Lebanon was also launched.

On October 24, 2024, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken worked in his office on the plane as he flew from Doha, Qatar to London, England.

The attack came as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken returned to the United States from a trip to the Middle East, where he and other U.S. officials warned Israel to respond in a way that would not further escalate conflict in the region and rule out the threat of nuclear weapons.
