China’s Commerce Ministry said on Sunday that Chinese Premier Li Qiang will speak at the opening of this week’s China International Import Expo, as Beijing seeks to show that its faltering economy is open.
Leaders from Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Serbia are expected to attend the opening ceremony and other events of the 7th Import Expo in Shanghai from Tuesday to Saturday, the foreign ministry said.
Launched by President Xi Jinping in 2018, this year’s CIIE is an opportunity to showcase China’s agenda of opening up and reform at a time when the world’s second-largest economy faces increasingly severe global trade barriers and domestic challenges.
As China attempts to transform its economy, it is competing with the United States and Europe in key industries such as semiconductors and electric vehicles.
The European Union plans to send representatives to the country soon for more talks on price commitments in the ongoing dispute over electric vehicle tariffs.
