President Joe Biden will host President-elect Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Wednesday for a traditional post-election meeting, the White House said Saturday.
Such meetings are customary between outgoing and incoming presidents, in part to mark the beginning of a peaceful transfer of power in American democracy.
But after the 2020 election, Trump failed to be re-elected, and Republican Trump did not sit down with Democrat Biden.
Four years later, Trump seeks the presidency, defeating Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris this week. Trump is the first former president to return to power since Grover Cleveland returned to the White House in the 1892 election.
The White House said Biden called Trump last Wednesday to congratulate him and invite him to meet in the Oval Office.
In his speech on Thursday, Biden said he had assured Trump that “I will direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. This is what the American people deserve.”
Their upcoming meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m.
