Five major Canadian news media companies filed legal action against ChatGPT owner OpenAI on Friday, accusing it of frequent breaches of copyright and online terms of use.
The move is the latest in a series of challenges facing OpenAi. Microsoft as its main supporter.
Torstar, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press and CBC/Radio-Canada said in statements that OpenAI is stealing vast amounts of content from media outlets to help develop its products without obtaining permission or providing compensation to content owners.
“Journalism is in the public interest. OpenAI’s use of other companies’ news for its own commercial gain is not in the public interest. It is illegal,” it said.
Earlier this month, billionaire entrepreneur Musk expanded his lawsuit against OpenAI. He said Microsoft and OpenAI were illegally trying to monopolize the market for generative artificial intelligence and squeeze out competitors.
