They’re one of the most in-demand tech jobs in the world – but what is a day in the life of a drone pilot like? CNBC takes a look at the latest and most cutting-edge drone jobs in three different industries. From rescue missions and filming travel videos to inspecting buildings for signs of corrosion, there’s one technology they’re all using: drones.
The commercial drone (UAC) market is expected to be worth $54.6 billion by 2030, according to drone market research firm Drone Industry Insights.
As demand for drone pilots continues to grow across the industry, a 2018 PwC report said widespread adoption of drones could create 650,000 jobs.
Drone operators are needed in multiple sectors, from construction and real estate to transportation and defence. CNBC interviewed three of them:
- Kevin Chang is a senior drone pilot with the Singapore Inspection and Engineering Department. He inspects buildings for defects and signs of corrosion.
- Tang Zhuofeng focuses on flying FPV (first person perspective drone). This requires flying the drone from a pilot’s perspective and is more hands-on than traditional drone flying.
- Ng Aik Thong has carried out more than 20 rescue missions during his tenure as Chief Technical Officer of NACT Engineering. He also specializes in drone accessories that change the functionality of your drone.
