Brian Thompson, CEO UnitedHealth GroupA person familiar with the matter told CNBC that the company’s insurance unit was shot and killed in downtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
UnitedHealth Group pulled out its investors the day after reports of the shooting broke. Thompson leads UnitedHealthcare, the largest private health insurer in the United States
A spokesman for the New York Police Department’s deputy commissioner of public information confirmed that a 50-year-old man was shot and killed in downtown Manhattan at 6:46 a.m. ET on Wednesday. The spokesman did not confirm the man’s identity.
The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead, the spokesperson said. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing, they added.
UnitedHealth Group held an investor day event at the Hilton Hotel in downtown New York City. UnitedHealth Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
