A division of UnitedHealthcare UnitedHealth Groupis the largest private health insurance payer in the United States and has been controversial for its relatively high health care claims denial rate.
On December 4, 2024, police placed bullet casing markers outside the Hilton Hotel in downtown Manhattan, New York, where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed.

Thompson, 50, was shot to death early Wednesday morning outside the downtown Hilton Hotel by a masked gunman wielding a silenced pistol. The gunman remains at large after escaping on his bicycle into nearby Central Park.
Thompson, a married father of two sons, was walking into a hotel on West 54th Street near Sixth Avenue for an investor meeting with UnitedHealth Insurance Company when he was shot.
Three spent shell casings and three live ammunition were found at the scene.
