Singapore ranks as Asia’s happiest country for second year running World Happiness Report 2024 Published Wednesday.
The city-state ranked 30th out of 143 places surveyed in the study.
Topping the list this year is Finland, followed by Denmark and Iceland.
The World Happiness Report is a collaborative effort by some of the world’s leading researchers and wellbeing scientists. The happiness rankings in this study are supported by the following data: Gallup World Poll This indicator measures an individual’s average life evaluation over the three-year period 2021 to 2023.

Experts also analyzed data on six key factors: GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, generosity and perceptions of corruption. Their research into these areas provides deeper insights and potential explanations for the subjective quality-of-life ratings people give them.

Data collected for these six factors came from the following organizations: world bankthis World Health Organization and Gallup World Poll.
“Singapore does very well in terms of GDP per capita and is one of the highest-ranking countries in our data set,” Wang Shun, co-author and editor of the 2024 World Happiness Report, told CNBC Make It.
Singapore’s perception of corruption is also very good…the lowest of any country in our data.

“This means that the Singaporean government is very clean and the people’s awareness of corruption is very low… you know, even lower than Denmark or Norway,” Wang added.
Denmark and Norway ranked second and seventh respectively in this year’s report.
In addition, Singapore “does particularly well in creating healthy life expectancy, longevity and healthy living,” said Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, the center’s director. Wellbeing Research Center Professor at the University of Oxford and editor of the 2024 World Happiness Report.
Despite this, Singapore ranks low on perceived social support, freedom of life choices and generosity.
“Singapore is performing below its weight,” De Neve said. “Taking into account all of Singapore’s objective indicators, you would expect Singapore to be in the top 20 of the World Happiness Report.”
“I am happy to challenge the Singaporean government and the people of Singapore to find ways to use the extraordinary city-state they have created to improve people’s quality of life,” said De Neve.
CNBC reached out to the Singapore government for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
According to the report, Myanmar, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are among the unhappiest countries in Asia.
India is the world’s most populous country and ranks 126th out of 143 countries surveyed.
