Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party as soon as Monday, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, citing three sources.

Sources told The Globe and Mail they were unsure when Trudeau would announce plans to leave, but said they expected it to happen before a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday.

According to the report, it is unclear whether Trudeau will resign immediately or continue to serve as prime minister until a new leader is elected.

Trudeau took over as leader of the Liberal Party in 2013, when the party was in deep trouble and fell to third place in the House of Commons for the first time.
