Special counsel Jack Smith resigned from the Justice Department on Friday after completing two criminal investigations into President-elect Donald Trump.

The departure was disclosed in a footnote in a court document filed Saturday with U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon of Florida, a Trump appointee. “The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and resigned from the Department of Justice on January 10,” the document reads.

In the filing, Justice Department officials urged Cannon not to extend the order issued last week Currently blocking the Department of Justice Unveil Smith’s investigation into Trump’s interference in the 2020 election results.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed an emergency motion late Friday asking a federal appeals court to overturn the order and push for the speedy release of Smith’s investigative report.

Cannon, Trump’s nominee to the bench, has temporarily blocked the Justice Department from releasing Smith’s final report until three days after the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals rules on the issue. Cannon has previously Mar-a-Lago documents case against Trump dismissed after ruling that Smith’s appointment as special prosecutor was unconstitutional.
