High-priced travel experiences like these illustrate the “quiet luxury” trend starting in the fashion world, where timeless lines trump the brand’s dazzling clothes.
Now, hidden wealth is pouring into the tourism industry, with the one percent increasingly abandoning dazzling destinations like Capri in favor of more low-key getaways.
Less spotlight, more connections
Jaclyn Sienna India, founder of ultra-luxury travel company Sienna Charlessaid she considered herself a long-term quiet luxury disciple.
While others may prefer the boulevards of Paris or the coast of Monaco, she escapes to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, once a year.
Luxury travel advisors say Monaco has long been a playground for the elite, but wealthy travelers are increasingly opting for more remote locations.

She said her clients were more concerned than ever about their families, well-being and mental health “because the world is more stressful”. As a result, they seek more connection than attention when traveling.
But another important aspect of quiet sporty luxury is safety. India says high-profile events such as the Super Bowl have become less attractive as celebrity homes have recently been targeted by burglars.
As a result, customers often seek out remote destinations at a moment’s notice, she said.
“We just booked a billionaire family’s villa on an island in Brazil. Brazil is not a place that immediately comes to mind…but, for me, it is a place that still remains A place with authenticity and soul. It has great food and an incredible spa and wellness culture,” India said.

Africa is another place where clients can seek solitude, she said. She said it was a choice made by former U.S. President George W. Bush, whom she accompanied on an elaborate personal trip to Ethiopia in 2015.

Roman and Erica is a luxury lifestyle company run by Erica Jackowitz and Roman Chiporukha. Jackowitz, a native New Yorker, equates understated luxury with the understated elegance of cashmere, in stark contrast to the ‘wear Chanel on your chest’ trend of the 1990s.
She said Jackowitz managed the lifestyle needs of 30 families, including politicians, technology CEOs and hedge fund executives. For them, quiet luxury travel means exclusivity and privacy, she said.
Sienna India said Africa is also a popular destination for wealthy travelers seeking solitude.

But she said the pandemic has accelerated affluent travelers’ desire for meaningful experiences — from asking for recommendations on where to go for a quiet morning hike to organizing a tennis match with Roger Federer.

Jackowitz said her clients never choose traditional cruises because they prefer to charter private yachts.In fact, she said The recent boom in the charter market prevented her from getting last-minute bookings.
“You’re now competing against 10 other people traveling with friends and family,” she said. “More people can afford this experience.”
This has led to wealthy travelers looking for new places to be alone, she said.

Roman and Erica secured seats on the first all-private astronaut mission for a client for $50 million, she said. Space travel is so popular that Chiporukha established a separate entity, SpaceVIP, to cater to the demand.
