Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge partially collapsed early Tuesday morning after a ship collision, local authorities said.

The bridge carries Route 695 across the Patapsco River in the southeastern part of the Baltimore metropolitan area.

A spokesman for the Baltimore City Police said the incident occurred at 1:35 a.m. local time on Tuesday and that the worker may have fallen into the water.

Baltimore Fire Department Battalion Chief Glenn Kukuucka told CNBC by phone that a large container ship hit the bridge overnight and there appeared to be people on the bridge at the time of the incident. He added that the vessel involved in the collision appeared to have been damaged.

“At 1:27 ET, the Coast Guard received a report that a motorized vessel had struck the bridge,” U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Matthew West told NBC News. “U.S. Coast The Guard identified the vessel as a 948-foot DALI vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard has deployed three response vessels and pollution response crews are en route from the National Capital Region in Maryland.”
