Apple engineers have been working on a robot that could follow users around the home, as well as a desktop device that would use robotics to adjust the display, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the research team.

Apple in February shut down an electric car project called the Special Projects Group, another of the company’s moonshot projects.Reports first on secretive scheme that employed thousands of people Appeared in 2014 The company then recruited automotive engineers and other related positions.

Apple’s car project is part of an internal effort to expand into new product markets. The company has also invested heavily in products and services such as the Apple Watch and Vision Pro virtual reality headset in recent years, but the latter may take years to generate meaningful revenue.

According to Bloomberg, the company’s hardware engineering division and its artificial intelligence and machine learning group are overseeing work on personal robotics. The report says work on personal home robots is still in the early stages of development.

Other technology companies have also explored home robots.

Amazon launched the $1,600 Astro home robot in 2021, which is essentially a smart display on wheels that can answer Alexa commands. It’s been nearly three years since the device debuted, but it’s still available in limited quantities on an invite-only basis. An executive in charge of the project left Amazon last May, and in November the company launched an Astro version of its mobile security guard.

Apple declined to comment.
