O.J. SimpsonThe former NFL star who was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife in a nationally watched trial has died of cancer at the age of 76, according to a statement from his family.

“He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren,” the statement said. “His family asks that you respect their wishes for privacy and grace during this transitional time.”

Reports emerged in February that Simpson had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was placed in hospice care while undergoing chemotherapy. In a video posted to X, Simpson denied he was receiving hospice care but did not say whether he had been diagnosed with cancer.

“Hospice? Hospice? Are you talking about hospice?” Simpson laughs in the video, adding that he doesn’t know who started the rumor.

Orenthal James Simpson played 11 seasons in the National Football League and was known to fans as “Juice,” but in the 1990s, his ex-wife Nicole Brown After Nicole Brown Simpson was killed, his sports legacy took a back seat.

On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were found stabbed to death outside her Los Angeles home.

When Los Angeles police went to Simpson’s home to talk to him about the murder, Simpson didn’t open the door, but police noticed blood on his car door.

Simpson was once a revered athlete who went from Hall of Fame icon to murder suspect.

Days later, police charged Simpson with murder after his attempt to evade arrest led to an infamous hours-long chase along a Southern California highway in a white Ford Mustang.

Simpson’s case went to trial in 1995 and was broadcast to millions of viewers across the country. He was acquitted of both murders, a verdict many considered controversial. Two years later, he was found civilly responsible for the double homicide.
