Shenzhen – China Electric Vehicle Company BYD is rapidly expanding its product lineup to include vehicles that compete with traditional automakers in the mass market, Tesla The high-end market is Jeep, and the off-road market is Jeep.
BYD released three new vehicles under the Fang Chengbao brand on Tuesday: the off-road SUV “Leopard 8”, the SUV “Super 3” for urban driving and the sports car “Super 9”.
The company did not announce pricing. Instead, BYD is promoting the vehicles primarily as concepts and hinting that more details will be released at next week’s Beijing auto show. It’s unclear to what extent the new cars will be fully electric.
BYD launched the “Fang Chengbao” brand last summer, focusing on “Consumers’ individual needs“, especially in the field of off-road vehicles and sports cars. The brand’s first car is a hybrid off-road SUV called “Leopard 5”, which was launched in November with a starting price of about 290,000 yuan ($40,845).
The company said on Tuesday it has since delivered nearly 20,000 Leopard 5 vehicles.
BYD also sells an off-road SUV and sports car under its luxury brand Yangwang, which was launched early last year and targets consumers willing to spend about 1 million yuan or more per vehicle.
Most of BYD’s cars are mass-market and are among the best-selling new energy vehicles in China. This category includes pure battery and hybrid vehicles.
“Over the past 20 years, our continuous technological innovation and disruption have set multiple benchmarks for the industry,” BYD chief scientist Lian Yubo said in Mandarin at a press conference on Tuesday, according to a CNBC translation.
“The blade battery defines the safety benchmark, DM-i sets the energy consumption benchmark, and DiSus sets the vehicle control benchmark.” When talking about the various technical systems BYD has released in recent years, Lian said.
For off-road vehicles, Lian touts BYD’s technology, which allows the cars to run on hybrid power.
BYD’s new car launch comes at a time of fierce competition in China’s new energy vehicle market.Chinese smartphone manufacturer Millet Last month it released its first electric car, directly targeting the Tesla Model 3.
Chinese automakers including BYD have also set their sights on global markets. This month, BYD announced plans to launch an electric pickup truck overseas this year.
