LONDON — The British army said Wednesday it had recovered “a number” of military horses that broke free during a routine exercise and were left riding unmanned in central London.
“This morning, some military horses became loose during a routine exercise. All horses have now been recovered and returned to camp,” a military spokesman said in a statement.
“A number of people and horses were injured and are receiving appropriate medical care.”
The animals, which were wearing saddles and bridles, were reportedly loose near Buckingham Palace. A white horse appears to be covered in blood as it gallops through central London.
City of London police said earlier on Wednesday they had taken control of two horses near Limehouse, east London.
A London Ambulance spokesman said they were called at 8.25am to reports of a person being thrown from a horse in Buckingham Palace Road.
They added: “We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, paramedics in rapid response vehicles and incident response officers.”
“Our first paramedics were on scene within five minutes. The incident is ongoing and we are working with our emergency service partners.”
