King Charles III will resume public duties next week after undergoing cancer treatment, Buckingham Palace announced on Friday.
About three months ago, Charles took a break from public appearances to focus on treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.
Buckingham Palace said Charles will make a public visit to a cancer treatment center on Tuesday, the first of several appearances he will make in the coming weeks. One of his first major events will be a state visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan in June.
Buckingham Palace did not provide an update on the king’s health or treatment, but said the “medical team are very encouraged by the progress to date and remain positive about the king’s continued recovery.”
Charles continued to carry out state duties, including reviewing government documents and meeting Chancellor Rishi Sunak after the diagnosis was announced on February 5.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “His Majesty is very pleased to be able to resume some public-facing duties and is very grateful to his medical team for their continued care and expertise.”
Charles’ return will ease pressure on other members of the royal family in the king’s absence, and the return of the Princess of Wales due to illness highlights the challenges facing the streamlined monarchy.
With the King promising to cut costs and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, commonly known as Prince Harry and Meghan, deciding to step away from royal duties, fewer family members are able to perform the endless ribbon-cutting, awards ceremonies and state activities make up the life of a modern royal family
