Aerospace Suppliers spirit aerospace systems inc. The company said on Thursday it would lay off some employees due to falling commercial aircraft deliveries as it grapples with an economic slowdown at its largest commercial aircraft customer, boeing company.

Spirit AeroSystems told employees in a memo, Wichita-based KSN earlier reportedapproximately 400 to 450 hours of labor will be cut.

“We are committed to implementing this transition in the most compassionate way possible,” Spirit AeroSystems said in a statement.

The Wichita plant had about 12,600 employees at the end of 2023, according to the company’s annual filings.

Spirit AeroSystems builds fuselages at the plant for Boeing’s best-selling 737 Max plane, whose deliveries have been slowed by burst door panels and the resulting safety crisis for Boeing.

Last week, Spirit AeroSystems said Boeing’s first-quarter deliveries were down 31% from the same period in 2023, with overall deliveries down 11.3%.

The company reported a quarterly loss of $616.7 million in the first three months of this year. The company has struggled financially in recent years, last making a profit in 2019.

The company is also in talks to be acquired boeing companySpirit AeroSystems was spun off from the company in 2005. airbus.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said in an interview with CNBC in April 2024 that it was “very likely” that the two companies would reach an agreement in the second quarter.
