The Japan Maritime Security Agency said that North Korea has notified Japan that it plans to launch a rocket carrying a space satellite to the Yellow Sea and east of Luzon Island from May 27 to June 4.
The notice comes ahead of a trilateral summit between Japan, South Korea and China scheduled for later Monday.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry said officials from the United States, Japan and South Korea held telephone talks regarding the notification and agreed that North Korea’s use of ballistic missile technology to launch satellites would violate United Nations resolutions.
Officials agreed to ask North Korea to cancel the planned launch, the ministry said in an emailed news release.
