L’Oréal said it is working with startups and research institutions to bioprint skin that can actually “feel”.

Paris, France—French beauty and cosmetics giant L’Oreal Research is underway on a synthetic skin that could one day “feel” like us.

At the Viva Technology conference in Paris last week, L’Oréal demonstrated “bioprinting” technology that can 3D print human-like skin.

The company has been using the technology for years to test new cosmetics on synthetic skin in the lab instead of animals.

L’Oreal says it has stopped testing Animal products in 1989long before regulatory requirements.

Guive Balooch, head of the L’Oréal Technology Incubator, describes bioprinting as “the ability to use 3D printing in conjunction with biology to reconstruct skin in a personalized way, tailored to a fully inclusive set of actual reconstructed skins.”

“This is going to be a revolution as well. We’re doing it internally but also working with external partners,” Balooch told CNBC at the company’s booth at VivaTech.

Orange CEO: Artificial intelligence should reflect different cultures around the world

This skin technology allows L’Oréal to mimic the diversity of real human skin, including conditions such as eczema and acne, as well as the ability to tan and heal damage, L’Oréal said in a statement last week.

However, L’Oreal doesn’t stop there. The company said it is also working with startups and research institutions to further develop its bioprinting technology so that skin can actually “feel”.

“We’re going to have the idea that sensors not only allow us to test on reconstructed skin but also have…sensory reality feedback, which is what happens when you use a product etc. so that we can not only To assess efficacy, you can also assess sensory feedback,” Balooch said.

AI assistant offers beauty tips

In addition to investing in dermatology technology, L’Oréal also showcased innovations around artificial intelligence at a major French tech show last week.

At its booth, the company showed off an artificial intelligence beauty assistant called “BeautyGenius.” The app scans the user’s face to identify their facial features.

It then provides the user with a facial analysis and recommends the best products for their skin. It’s powered by generative AI, the same technology used in OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot.

L’Oréal has also launched an artificial intelligence marketing lab called CREAITECH, which includes tools that allow it to create artificial intelligence-generated marketing content that meets brand standards.

L’Oréal is incorporating AI-assisted marketing into its 37 beauty brands, including Kiehl’s, Lancome, Giorgio Armani Beauty and Yves Saint Laurent Beauté, according to the company. ).
