Donald Trump gathered with at least 80 chief executives in Washington on Thursday to make it clear to them that if he is re-elected president in November, they will see tax cuts and business cuts. Supervision.
Trump has said that if he wins the White House, he will cut taxes, including income taxes, and restore the economic policies he established during his first term, people familiar with the matter said.
Trump also mentioned to executives a proposal he recently introduced in Nevada to eliminate the worker tip tax. Trump then told a story to CEOs about how excited the tipped employees were about his proposal, eliciting laughter from business leaders, according to multiple sources.
Trump spoke for about an hour at the Business Roundtable’s quarterly meeting. Audience includes apple CEO Cook, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser and Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan.
President Joe Biden’s chief of staff, Jeff Zients, addressed the group earlier in the day, sources said.
CNBC sources spoke on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely about the private gathering.
“We’re going to provide you with more of the same over the next four years,” one person in the room said, describing Trump’s message to company leaders.
Representatives for the Trump campaign and the Business Roundtable did not respond to requests for comment before publication.
For Trump and the CEOs in attendance, the meeting represented an effort to mend ties after some distanced themselves from the former president.
In 2017, the business advisory group was disbanded after Trump sought to blur “both sides” of white nationalist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia. During the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, senior leaders, including members of the Business Roundtable, called on Trump to stop the violence.
Trump also took a dig at Biden. “We need a president who is at the top of his game, but let’s face it, this president is not at the top of his game.”
A spokesman for Cook declined to comment on whether he attended the meeting.
Trump told a meeting of House Republicans earlier in the day that the idea of implementing a “comprehensive tariff policy” would eventually get the United States off the income tax.
