Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed on Saturday that their forces had attacked the US aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Red Sea, two U.S. officials told Reuters.
“This is not correct,” said one official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Iran-aligned Houthis first launched drone and missile attacks on key waterways in November in what they said was an effort to support Palestinian militants in Gaza, where Israel has waged a war that has lasted more than eight months.
In more than 70 attacks, the Houthis sank two ships, seized another and killed at least three sailors.
The Houthis previously said their forces attacked the Eisenhower in the Red Sea and that the operation succeeded in achieving its objectives, without elaborating. The group also said it attacked a merchant ship, the Transworld Navigator, in the Arabian Sea. It did not disclose when the attack occurred.
The Houthi armed forces stated in a statement that the Global Navigator was directly hit by a missile.
