Dalian, China — Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang on Tuesday defended his country’s technological development while criticizing efforts to limit global cooperation.
He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the World Economic Forum’s “Summer Davos” meeting in Dalian, China, at a time when the European Union is nervous about the import of Chinese electric cars.
“The rapid rise of China’s emerging industries is rooted in our unique comparative advantages,” Li Keqiang said through an official English interpreter.
He pointed out that China has a large market, a large industrial network, sufficient labor force, rich application scenarios, and high consumer acceptance.
“This is how China’s emerging industries gain competitiveness,” Li said.
Earlier this month, the European Union announced plans to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports. The United States said it would increase vehicle tariffs to 100%.
According to reports, China and the EU Agree to discuss potential tariffs.
“In many ways, the depth of international cooperation determines the height of human development, so we must embrace each other with open arms,” Li said, noting the need to “reject” confrontation.
In January this year, at the forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Li Keqiang stated in his speech that technological innovation should not be a means to restrict other countries.
Beijing has repeatedly asked Washington to lift restrictions on Chinese companies purchasing advanced technology from U.S. companies.
