Three people were shot dead at a border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan on Sunday, Israeli officials said, in an attack that appeared to be related to Gaza’s 11-month war.
The military said gunmen in a truck approached the Allenby Bridge intersection from the Jordanian side and opened fire on Israeli security forces, who killed the attacker in a shootout. It is said that the three killed were Israeli civilians. Israel’s Magen David Adom aid department said they were all men in their 50s.
Jordan is investigating the shooting, according to Jordan’s state-run Petra news agency. The Western-aligned Arab country achieved peace with Israel in 1994 but is deeply critical of its policies toward the Palestinians. Allenby Ferry, which crosses the Jordan River, is used primarily by Israelis, Palestinians and international tourists.

Civil protection authorities said the attack targeted the home of Mohamed Morsi, deputy director of northern Gaza, in the city’s Jabaliya refugee camp.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment. The military said it would try to avoid harming civilians and only target militants.

The war has caused massive destruction and displaced approximately 90 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million people, often multiple times.

Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem – territory where Palestinians hope to establish a future state – in the 1967 Mideast War. Israel withdrew its soldiers and settlers from Gaza in 2005 but still controls its airspace, coastline and most land crossings. After Hamas seized power from Palestinian rivals in 2007, it joined Egypt in imposing a blockade on Gaza.
