American Airlines has canceled all flights from Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, due to the possible arrival of Hurricane Milton, according to a Tampa International Airport message board.

Airlines canceled hundreds of flights, theme parks prepared to close some areas, cruise lines changed routes and Floridians braced for Hurricane Milton to make landfall.

The Category 4 storm, which has maximum sustained winds of nearly 145 mph, is expected to hit Florida’s west coast on Wednesday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. More than 50 counties in Florida have declared a state of emergency.

Tampa International Airport suspended operations at 9 a.m. ET on Tuesday and said it would “reopen when it is safe to do so.”

Orlando International Airport will close at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Southwest AirlinesThe company, which has about a fifth of the market in Orlando, had 402 fewer flights on Wednesday, according to FlightAware.

More than 750 Orlando flights were canceled, accounting for more than 85% of Wednesday’s flight schedule, according to FlightAware. The airport serves most flights in and out of Tampa and Southwest Florida International Airport. Myers’ game Wednesday was also canceled.

The airline is waiving change fees and fare differences for affected customers. American Airlines and United Airlines Flights from Florida were increased ahead of Milton’s expected landfall.
