brazilian aircraft manufacturer embraer CEO Francisco Gomes Neto said the company is studying the market and new technologies to ensure it can build a completely new jet.

A new plane could help the planemaker compete with larger rivals Airbus and boeing companythe company delivers hundreds of aircraft per year compared to the dozens delivered by Embraer.

But Gomez Neto noted that no decision has been made yet.

“Currently, we have no concrete plans to develop a large narrow-body aircraft,” he said, adding that research into new engine technology, avionics and potential requirements was “well underway.”

Meanwhile, Gomez Neto said Embraer was working to improve performance and sell its regional aircraft, which earlier this year won a American Airlinesbuilds the E2 jet and “fulfills our promise to our customers.”

The FAA earlier this month approved a freighter version of the E190 passenger-to-cargo aircraft, clearing the way for its commercial rollout.

“That’s probably the advantage we have: we have a great product,” Gomez Neto said.

After the outbreak, both Airbus and Boeing are working hard to increase production and deliver aircraft on time. Boeing faces additional challenges from a safety crisis and a mechanics strike.

Boeing had planned to take control of Embraer’s commercial aircraft business but ended those discussions in early 2020.

Embraer, which like its rivals is facing supply chain pressures from the pandemic, is taking a deeper look at delivery capabilities.

Gomez Neto said engines, hydraulic valves, cabin interiors and parts are some of the areas where suppliers have struggled to increase production. He added that he expected supply chain issues may ease in 2026.
