apple Will buy PixelmatorPixelmator, the creator of the image-editing app for Apple’s iPhone and Mac platforms, announced Friday in a blog post.
Pixelmator is a Lithuanian company founded in 2007, best known in recent years for Pixelmator and Pixelmator Pro, which compete with Adobe Photoshop. It also develops Photomator, a photo editing application.
For years, Apple has emphasized the Pixelmator app in keynotes at its product launches. In 2018, Apple named Pixelmator Pro the Mac App of the Year, citing the company’s enthusiasm for embracing Apple’s machine learning and artificial intelligence features, such as removing distracting objects from photos or making automatic color adjustments.
“From day one, we’ve been inspired by Apple and put the same intense focus on design, ease of use, and performance into our products,” Pixelmator said in its blog post.
Apple hasn’t acquired as many large companies as its Silicon Valley rivals. It prefers to make smaller acquisitions of companies that have products or people that can be used to create Apple capabilities. Neither Pixelmator nor Apple disclosed the price of the deal.
Pixelmator said in its blog post that “there will not be any major changes to the Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator apps at this time.”
Earlier this week, Apple released the first version of Apple Intelligence, a suite of features that includes photo editing features like Clean Up, which uses AI to remove people or objects from photos.
Apple has also acquired other popular apps that have received accolades at the company’s product launches and awards shows.
In 2020, Apple acquired the weather app Dark Sky, which was eventually integrated into Apple’s default weather app. In 2017, it acquired Workflow, an automation and macro app that eventually became the iPhone scripting app Shortcuts and the basis for the more powerful Siri assistant.
