British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the UK will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035 and committed the UK to achieve more ambitious climate targets at the United Nations COP29 climate summit.
The new target is in line with recommendations from the Climate Advisory Committee, which said last month it should exceed the current target of 78% reductions in emissions compared with 1990 levels.
“At this COP, I am pleased to announce that we are building on our reputation as a climate leader with the UK’s 2035 NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) target to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels. A reduction of at least 81%,” Starmer told a news conference at the Baku climate conference in Azerbaijan.
Starmer said the British public would not be burdened by the new target, which excludes emissions from international aviation and shipping.
“We’re not going to start telling people how to live. We’re not going to start telling people what to do,” he said.
