Amit Yoran, founder of cybersecurity company tenable entered the public markets as CEO, died on Friday. He is 54 years old.
Tenable confirmed Yoran’s death in a statement Saturday press release. Although the company said his death was unexpected, Yoland took medical leave early last month to battle cancer.
Funeral details have not yet been released, the company said Saturday.
Yoran took the helm of Tenable in 2016, his latest leadership role in cybersecurity. He served as President of RSA Security from 2014 to 2016.
His decades-long cybersecurity career also includes work with government and nonprofit organizations. Yoran served as the National Cybersecurity Director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2004.
Two years after Yoran took over, Tenable went public on Nasdaq. At the time, the IPO was seen as a success story for Wall Street cybersecurity companies.
Yoran said the company’s focus on enterprise technology vulnerabilities is unique in the market, while also pointing to its successful move to a subscription model. By 2018, more than half of the Fortune 500 companies were Tenable customers, Yoran said.
“We have become one of the most trusted and beloved names in cybersecurity,” he told CNBC Tenable’s initial public offering. “Only the best and highest-performing private companies have the opportunity to go public. This gives us a place on a bigger stage and can tell our story.”
Tenable Chief Financial Officer Steve Vintz and Chief Operating Officer Mark Thurmond have served as co-CEOs since Yoran took a medical leave in December. The company said they will continue to share the role while the board searches for a permanent successor.
According to a note to employees, Yoland had expected his leave to last only a few months and said his condition was “treatable.” publish on his LinkedIn page. He has “full trust” in Vintz and Thurmond to lead the company in his absence.

Yoran also served as chairman of Tenable’s board of directors, a position that will now be filled by Art Coviello, the company’s lead independent director. In a statement, Covello called Yoland an “extraordinary” leader, colleague and friend.
“His passion for cybersecurity, his strategic vision and his ability to inspire those around him have shaped Tenable’s culture and mission,” Coviello said. “His legacy will continue to guide us moving forward.”
