LAS VEGAS — BMW said Tuesday it will install a new operating system and “surround” displays in all of its upcoming vehicles.
The German automaker announced at the CES technology show that the new BMW panoramic iDrive system features a windshield-length display and is powered by BMW Operating System X. These features are said to begin rolling out before the end of this year.
The new display appears at the base of the windshield, an emerging trend in the automotive industry. The goal is to provide drivers with more information but allow them to focus on the road.
Frank Weber, who is responsible for BMW car development, said in a press release: “With this advancement, we are giving one of the best and most comprehensive infotainment systems in the world even more powerful functions and once again setting the standard for multi-mode The industry benchmark for interaction.
Display content similar to Ford Motor Company’s The Lincoln brand includes an SUV called the Nautilus due in 2024.
BMW says the new BMW system also has a “multifunction steering wheel” that illuminates relevant buttons depending on how the vehicle is used.
The system will first be launched internationally, followed by a first rollout in the United States planned for mid-2026.
