Anthropic announced Wednesday the launch of its first enterprise product and free iPhone app.
The generative AI startup is the company behind Claude, one of the chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and GoogleGemini, has exploded in popularity over the past year. Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI research executives and its backers include Google, sales force and Amazonit has completed five different financing transactions in the past year, totaling approximately $7.3 billion.
Anthropic co-founder Daniela Amodei said the new venture, called Team, has been in development for the past few quarters and involves beta testing with 30 to 50 customers in industries such as technology, financial services, legal services and healthcare. said in an interview with CNBC, adding that the idea for the service stemmed in part from the demand from many customers for specialized enterprise products.
“Most of what we hear from businesses is that people are already using Cloud in the office,” Amodai said.
The Team plan provides access to all three of Anthropic’s latest Claude models, adding usage limits, management tools and billing management, as well as longer “context windows” meaning businesses can have “multi-step conversations” and upload data Research papers and handle long documents such as legal contracts, Anthropic said. According to the press release, other upcoming features include “quoting reliable sources to verify claims generated by artificial intelligence.”
Teams products cost $30 per user per month when billed monthly. It requires at least five users.
Human-friendly iPhone app
Anthropic’s first iOS app is free for all plans and available starting Wednesday. It offers synchronization with web chats and the ability to upload photos and files from your smartphone.
An Android app is also planned. “We actually just hired our first Android engineer, so we’re actively developing Android apps,” Amodei told CNBC, adding that the engineer will start work next week.
More than a month later, news of team plans and iOS app comes Anthropic debuts Claude 3, a suite of artificial intelligence models it says are the fastest and most powerful yet. These new tools are called Claude 3 Opus, Sonnet and Haiku.
The company said Claude 3 Opus, the most capable of the new models, outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini Ultra on industry benchmarks such as undergraduate-level knowledge, graduate-level reasoning and basic mathematics. This is also the first time Anthropic has provided multi-modal support: users can upload photos, charts, documents and other types of unstructured data for analysis and answers.
Other models Sonnet and Haiku are more compact and cheaper than Opus. The company declined to say how long it would take or how much it would cost to train the Claude 3, but it said companies like Airtable and Asana Help with A/B testing of models. In a press release issued Wednesday, Anthropic confirmed that other customers currently using Claude include Pfizer, Asana, Zoom, Perplexity AI, Bridgewater Associates and others.
According to PitchBook data, the field of generative AI has exploded in the past year, with investment in nearly 700 deals reaching a record $29.1 billion in 2023, and deal value increasing by more than 260% from the previous year. This has become the hottest phrase on every quarterly corporate earnings call. Scholars and ethicists have expressed serious concerns about the technology’s tendency to spread bias, but even so, it has quickly entered schools, online travel, the medical industry, online advertising and other fields.
This time last year, Anthropic raised Series A and Series B funding, but it only launched the first version of its chatbot without any consumer exposure or fanfare. Now it’s one of the hottest artificial intelligence startups, with products that compete directly with ChatGPT in the enterprise and consumer space.
Claude 3 can be summarized in about 150,000 words, or a sizable book, on the length scale of Moby-Dick or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Its previous version could only summarize 75,000 words. Users can enter large data sets and request summaries in the form of memos, letters, or stories. In comparison, ChatGPT can handle about 3,000 words.
In January, OpenAI faced criticism for its enterprise products when it quietly reversed a ban on military use of ChatGPT and its other artificial intelligence tools. Its policy still states that users should not “use our services to harm themselves or others,” including “developing or using weapons.” Prior to this change, OpenAI’s policy page explicitly stated that the company did not allow its models to be used for “activities with a high risk of physical harm, including: weapons development (and) military and warfare.”
Anthropic’s stance on Cloud’s military use is similar to OpenAI’s latest policy.
“The way we draw the line today is we don’t discriminate based on industry or business, but we have an acceptable use policy for what you can and can’t use Claude for,” Amodei told CNBC. What to do….very strict guidelines around Claude, not to be used with weapons, basically anything that could cause violence or harm others.
