OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever said on Tuesday he was leaving the company Microsoft-Support activation.
“I’m excited for what comes next – this project is very meaningful to me personally and I will share details in due course,” Suzkweil wrote in a statement. X posts Tuesday.
The departures come after OpenAI went through a leadership crisis involving co-founder and CEO Sam Altman last November.
Last November, the OpenAI board ousted Altman, leading to his resignation (or threat to resign), which included an open letter signed by nearly all OpenAI employees and prompted an outcry from investors, including Microsoft. Within a week, Altman was back at the company and the board members who voted to oust him, Helen Toner, Tasha McCauley and Ilya Sutskever ) will exit the company. Adam D’Angelo also voted to oust Altman, but he remains on the board.
When Altman was asked about Sutskever’s condition on a Zoom call, he said he didn’t have any updates to share.
“I love Ilya…I want us to work together for the rest of our careers, mine, whatever,” Altman said. “Nothing to announce today.”
On Tuesday, Altman shared his thoughts as Sutskower departed.
“This is very sad for me; Ilya was undoubtedly one of the greatest thinkers of our generation, a guiding light in our field, and a dear friend,” Altman wrote. on X. “His talent and vision are well known; his passion and compassion are less known, but equally important.” Research director Jakub Pachocki will replace Sutskever as OpenAI’s chief scientist, Altman said.
OpenAI has since announced new board members, including former sales force Co-executives Brett Taylor and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. Microsoft was granted a non-voting board observer position.
In March this year, OpenAI announced the establishment of a new board of directors and concluded an internal investigation by the American law firm WilmerHale into the events that led to Altman’s resignation. Altman rejoins the OpenAI Board of Directors and announces three new board members: Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Nicole Seligman, former Executive Vice President and Global General Counsel of Sony and President of Sony Entertainment ; and Fidji Simo, CEO and Chairman of Instacart.
According to a March release from the company, the three new members will “work closely with current board members Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers and Bret Taylor, as well as Greg, Sam and OpenAI’s senior management.”
News of Sutskever’s departure comes a day after OpenAI rolled out new artificial intelligence models and a desktop version of ChatGPT, along with an updated user interface, in the company’s latest effort to expand the use of its popular chatbot.
Technical lead Mira Murati said during a live broadcast on Monday that the update will bring GPT-4 to everyone, including free users of OpenAI. She added that the new model, GPT-4o, is “much faster” and has improved text, video and audio capabilities. OpenAI says it eventually plans to allow users to use ChatGPT for video chat.
“This is the first time we’ve really taken a big step forward in terms of ease of use,” Mulati said.
