The world’s top golfer, Scottie Scheffler, was taken into custody Friday and charged with felony assault on a police officer and reckless driving outside the Kentucky PGA Championship.
According to an ESPN reporter who witnessed the incident, Scheffler, 27, was spotted driving at the entrance to the event venue Valhalla Golf Club and initially failed to obey police orders to stop before being arrested.
Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. ET, according to the Louisville Department of Corrections website. But as of 8:50 a.m. ET, the charges against him appeared to have been resolved, according to the Commerce Department’s website.
The circumstances of Scheffler’s arrest and the charges against him are unclear. A PGA spokesperson did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
Scheffler is scheduled to tee off on the 10th hole on the second day of the tournament at 10:08 a.m. ET, according to the golf association. professional golf association Event website.
ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington said Friday morning that he saw Scheffler “being detained by police and handcuffed in the back of a police car after trying to get around what he thought was a security guard.” .
“When the officer failed to stop him from strapping himself into the car, Scheffler drove another 10 yards before stopping the car,” Darlington told ESPN’s “SportsCenter.”
