Rivian Cars Redesigned its all-electric R1 pickup and SUV models to improve range, performance and computing power Nvidia the company said Thursday.

While the 2025 model won’t look much different from the current model on the outside, Rivian says it has changed more than half of the second-generation’s hardware components and redesigned the battery and electrical architecture, which also Known as the brain of the car.

“We continue to evolve our flagship R1 vehicle to deliver uncompromising quality and performance,” Rivian CEO and founder RJ Scaringe said in a statement. “Our revamped R1S and R1T further push the boundaries of technology to create our most innovative vehicles yet. Powerful product.

The most significant change in the new cars is their computing power, which Rivian says is 10 times better than previous systems.

The new system uses dual Nvidia DRIVE Orin processors to help power “autonomous computing modules,” which include driver assistance features. Rivian says an “advanced version” of the system will also offer broader functionality, such as hands-free driving “for a period of time.” Drivers still need to pay attention to the road at all times, Rivian said.

The refresh of the current product comes as the automaker attempts to increase sales of its flagship model ahead of the launch of a less expensive “R2” model, which is expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2026 and start at about $45,000.

Sales of its current models have slowed due to industry-wide sluggish sales of electric vehicles, so lower-priced vehicles are critical to Rivian’s expansion. The company has cut headcount, lowered operating costs and restructured its Illinois plant to increase efficiency and thereby lower capital expenditures. It also paused construction of new factories in Georgia, saving $2.25 billion.

Rivian shares have been under pressure as the automaker continues to burn through cash and report significant losses. Rivian reported a loss of $1.45 billion in the first quarter of this year.

Its shares have fallen about 50% so far this year.

Rivian says deliveries of the 2025 R1S and R1T will begin immediately.

The California-based company will continue to offer three motor configurations—dual, triple, and quad—as well as standard, max, and large battery packs, with maximum ranges of 270 miles, 330 miles, and 420 miles, respectively.

Rivian said the second-generation R1S SUV will be priced $1,000 more than the current model, starting at $75,900, with high-end three-motor models starting at about $106,000. Pricing for the R1T still starts at $69,900, but triple-motor options top out at $100,000. The company did not announce specific pricing for the high-end four-wheeler.

The updated battery pack will continue to use “2170 cylindrical cells,” but the pack housing now features a large high-pressure casting to simplify manufacturing and reduce mass.

Three- and four-wheel vehicles are equipped with new drives manufactured by Rivian. The top-end four-motor will now deliver up to 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 pound-feet of torque, and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds when Launch Mode is used. That’s an increase from 835 horsepower and 908 pound-feet of torque.

Rivian says the vehicles also feature more luxurious, updated interiors and a completely redesigned software interface. Charging times have also improved, with all vehicles able to add 140 miles of range in about 20 minutes.
