Russia has expressed contempt for Ukraine’s attempts to invite its former Soviet ally to an upcoming peace summit in Switzerland, saying the invitation has been rejected by its neighbor.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told Russian news agency TASS that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Western allies had “pleaded” leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, the CIS It is an intergovernmental organization between Russia and the former Soviet republics.
“Heavy artillery was used: Zelensky and his Western ‘friends’ began making personal phone calls begging Commonwealth leaders to attend this ‘gathering’. We know that not one of them succumbed to such persuasion,” Deputy Minister said in an interview excerpt The full text will be released on Wednesday.
“Kiev and its Western administrators actively seek to attract representatives from countries of the Southern and Eastern Hemispheres. Of course, they do not ignore our partners in the CIS countries. We are sure that they often receive invitations that remain unanswered,” added Luzin said. CNBC was unable to verify the claim.
Russia jealously defends its influence in the Commonwealth of Independent States, which includes Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. At the same time, Western countries have tried to strengthen relations with several members of the Commonwealth of Independent States, but have been scorned by Russia.
Galuzin claimed that the summit, which Russia refused to participate in (and therefore was not invited to), “is an attempt to hastily form an anti-Russian alliance and issue an ultimatum to Russia in order to create an image of global support for Russia.” ‘Based (peace) package’,” he repeated Moscow’s statement that without Russia’s participation, the peace summit was doomed to fail.
Russia is very sensitive to Western intrusions into its backyard, especially as the number of CIS members has been shrinking in recent years. The Baltic states chose not to join the organization when it was established in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Georgia withdrew participation after a brief war with Russia in 2008, and Moldova suspended participation after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
